Pastor JJ Dygert has been at Kennewick First Lutheran Church since 2018 and loves living in the Tri-Cities! Prior to coming to KFLC he was a pastor in Milton-Freewater, Oregon, as well as in Cavalier, Neche, and Pembina, North Dakota. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Biblical Studies from Lutheran Bible Institute (aka Trinity Lutheran College) and with a Master of Divinity from Luther Seminary.
Pastor JJ and his wife Heather have been married for almost 29 years and are parents to Colin, daughter-in-law Reagan, and Kai. They are also parents of two dogs--Gabby (chihuahua and dachshund mix), as well as Koda (dachshund mix). |
Pastor JJ enjoys reading, working in his yard, and sports of all kinds with soccer, golf, and watching baseball and football being his favorites. He still feels grounded in his childhood with his love for all things Lego and Star Wars.
In ministry, Pastor JJ feels he is called to "live a life grounded in God's love, to pronounce forgiveness and reconciliation, and to help parishioners gain a better understanding of what God has in store for them." In a society that finds it hard to ask and answer tough questions about faith, Pastor JJ is willing to say, “I am not sure about that, but let’s take a deeper look and see what we can find out together!”
His favorite bible verse is Isaiah 41:9-10… you whom I took from the ends of the earth, and called from its farthest corners, saying to you, ‘You are my servant, I have chosen you and not cast you off ’; do not fear, for I am with you, do not be afraid, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my victorious right hand. This verse has given comfort in times of upheaval and difficulty in his life.
His favorite hymn is “Gather Us In,” by Marty Haugen. The beginning of verse 4 says, “Not in the dark of buildings confining, not in some heaven light years away – here in this place the new light is shining, now is the kingdom, and now is the day!” This hymn also helps to understand that the God of the universe, IS the same God who calls us by name!
Pastor JJ serves on the board of Lutherhaven Ministries in Coeur d’Alene Idaho, is part of the Faithful Innovation Leadership Group for the Northwest Intermountain Synod and a trained Stephen Ministries Leader for our congregation.
